There is Resident Evil, Shaun of the Dead, The Walking Dead and tons of zombie genre fiction. The literary scene has its own share of genre outbreak in the bookshelves. Only this time Chuck Hogan partnering with Guillermo Del Toro–who is well known for his silver screen hit Pan’s Labyrinth, created a twist in the genre by mixing the undead with vampirism. They probably are sick tired of how zombies can be awfully stupid villains.

The partnership created The Strain.

This definitely will be the first and last of my singing contest participation within the advertising industry. The start of my career's downfall--if I ever had one, is this. Fuck.

First one is an elimination Round piece: Bon Jovi’s You Give Love a Bad Name. Next is the supposed to be Final 3 piece which was given by Fox: Madonna’s Crazy For You (an alternative rock rendition, shot during practice session).

Agency Idol 2010 is presented by Fox International Channels Philippines last August 26, 2010 at NBC Tent, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig.

Because you don't have all the time in the world and there are better things to do, never once I've fancied watching 20-24 episodes of U.S. TV Series over a short 2-hour cinema flick. But since I've convinced myself of getting an iPod last 2009, I have had control over the time of watching the long stretch of continuities through many episodes. Though given the luxury of getting copies via torrent and watching them within my own time, I have been very picky over the titles.  Because I don't like time being left to waste, I let go once the first 20 minutes of the 1st episode bore me, some got lucky by got me tolerating up till 5 episodes. I tried Spartacus, CSI, X-Files, and--mind you, even Glee (I'll never be watching that horror again). But two brilliant titles turned around my U.S. TV Series pessimism: Fringe and 24.
Fringe, Olivia Dunham, Walter Bishop, Peter Bishop
Fringe got me with their 1st episode which lasted up to 2 seasons and now on the wait for the torrent files of Season 3. Though I still think that they can never beat the success of the 1st season--I don't know if its just me, but the parallel universe concept somehow ruined the realism of the 1st season's brilliant plot/s. That is very unlikely of 24. What turned out to be my filler series while I wait for the 3rd Season of Fringe is also a blockbuster. Though I know it's a bit late to appreciate the 2002 hit series, but Season 1 is entertaining enough to lighten up my anticipation of Fringe Season 3. But Season 2, which is more complex and I think thoroughly conceptualized than Season 1, I think almost got me converted from being a Fringe fanatic. I have yet to watch Season 3 of the two titles, but to sum it all up with these two TV greats, even though time is scarce I am having no regrets in spending more than 2 hours for entertainment.

If anyone noticed, I have not given any say about the recent hostage-taking thing that's been the talk of the town for, like-what, 2-3 weeks? And this will be probably the first and last.

Media, Politicians, and Filipinos alike has a new tabloid-chismis. Everybody just loves talking about what happened and there goes eventually the pointing-finger-to-who argument. Tell you what, it's all fucking tabloid and non-intellectual media sensation.

Get to the problem and point out solutions. Negate people (damn those mindless politicians) and things that are irrelevant and who are itching to get to the limelight. Then move on like what this country should do.

Geez! As if some international terrorist or dr. evil caused a scene. It's just one man hostage-taker, and the fuss and failure reached to this? There are worse things that can happen my friend. Just watch a Stallone flick.

I looked at my mother and saw the marks of age slowly embracing her everyday. Reality gives me shudder that she is getting older each day while I enjoy the years ahead of me. But even though looking ahead of my bright future, I still remember from the back of my head that my mother indeed made her mark on the child that is struggling to express a paternal gratitude (or lacking for a better vocabulary--love).

My mother brought me up well as a young (from 18 y.o. I think) single parent and her remaining days will never be wasted, these days shall be filled with love being reciprocated as much as her grateful son can try. As long as she is there, the many years of my life will be for giving my mother what I wish she had when she was at my age--and of course what I want for her at her current age.

This I know will not be forever and time will always be quickly ticking when you look at it. But I refuse to be conquered by the inevitability as long as she's with me and as long as I live. My love for her will go farther than the lines of her skin and beyond the heavens of which I know we will again be together after this lifetime.

The 2010 World Cup is nearing! And yes, the Philippines is part of the frenzy. Even ABS-CBN, the biggest network in the country didn't want the biggest sporting event in the world to just past by like a ship in the night. I feel like subscribing to Balls Channel already from June-July of this year!

The Philippines is part of the world football map even though not as a competitive team but as fanatics of the the most beautiful game of the world.

We are now counting days and yet there are people who have not set their eyes on any as World Cup favorites like me. Many are placing their bets for Spain to win the cup. Of course the star-studded England and Brazilian squad is not to be set aside. Much as defending champions Italy. Though these football greats are the much talked teams these days. Never can't we neglect France, Netherlands, Germany and other participating countries.

Difficult it is to place a bet on one country. I'm pretty sure this photo can help. Pick your team boys!

You probably received viral e-mails of the Guatemala sinkhole and the probable impression it sent is awe. It is indeed way to real to be true. I can't believe it myself and so curiosity has to be given nosh, thanks to our digital library also known as the internet.

A sinkhole is a natural depression caused by removal of soil or bedrock, often both, by water as per Wikipedia.com. It creates both ugly scenes and astounding natural tourist spots.

Googling these earth holes, I found this interesting entry wherein different earth holes are featured. Marvel on the photos below that can also be found on the blog link:

Yes, it is one of Tom Cruise's Hollywood blockbusters. Though, I had acquired the book before learning from a friend that it has already been adapted on the silver screen. But nonetheless, you know that I am biased on books than movies anyway, so I neglected the easier two hour viewing of the movie and take time to read a hundred-page fiction.

The Firm, I can say is worth the time and eye-stress. A rag to riches story of the protagonist, but nope, not quite. There has to have conspiracies and twists of a suspense thriller genre title of course for us to be hooked. And so it did, the story revolves around a mafia controlled law firm and how they mold and pamper young talents such as Mitch McDeere in a short span of time. Only that, the legal firm is not all that “legal”.

Everything about the narration of the story is well done, except how the leading character cleverly worked his way out of the corrupted hands of the mafia and the firm. John Grisham plotted it out as an impossible task and it’s just a little bit overcooked that a lawyer Mitch McDeere can outsmart both relentless intelligence of the NBI and the brutality and network of the mafia. He’s not that too much of a superman ain’t he? At any rate, it can be explained as you read through it, but it’s for the reader to judge.

Anyway, the novel provided much entertainment and suspense, with typical Grisham style I guess—though this is only the first I’ve read from his titles. The Firm did make me consider in buying another title from John Grisham, but it will be a while till I forget his style of writing maybe.

Though more than a century already, my generation never knew the existence of the Philippine National Railways. We know only the dilapidated and deteriorating rail tracks and trains that pass by and make cars abide to rusting stop, look, and listen billboards. Plus the usual visuals of squatter houses and topless by-standers a few inches from the passing train coaches, killing time with a bottle of gin. Its a shame the Philippine National Railways or PNR went through all of this.

Good thing at last, the Philippine government gave way to the idea of its renovation as a Philippine-Korea joint project. Though not fully operational yet, information has been passed around already (heard of it last year) that it can accommodate mass transportation even with limited railways and trains.

With our frustration on the gas prices, terrible Manila traffic and high demand on the MRT and LRT. Its a good move from the government to provide Filipinos another alternative of transportation. And today, I gave that alternative a try.

Thumbs up for:

* Cheap fare! I traveled from Sta. Mesa station to Buendia, Makati station for only Php 10.
* Newly purchased trains, compared to the MRT and LRT, are bigger, wider and has great air-conditioning.
* Best option not to be late from work/school. My travel time only consumed 9 minutes.
* Scheduled departure and arrival time
* Not cluttered by advertisements (yet)
* Guards stationed on each train coach.
* Great stretch! The train can go from Caloocan up to Binan, Laguna

Not for:

* Scary surroundings. Only squatters from the near distance from the rail were removed.
* Like buses, fare is collected by a kunduktor and you'll be given ticket for inspection
* Unreliable security: Only one guard per station, that guard won't even inspect passengers' bags.
* Airconditioned trains are not yet being utilized for Binan, Laguna station
* Safety. No one doesn't even care about walking on the rail tracks.

That is how the PNR is faring at the moment, but I really do hope that its renovation goes to full swing. It is such a great help for many especially that the projects of its extension is on its way as well.

For more information, visit the PNR website.

You are bombarded by that Korean song—Nobody but you—everywhere you go and there are others from the same genre who is riding with the torrent of K-Pop popularity in Manila. Good thing there's your MP3 player headphone to isolate you from the audio torture and yes you are saved. Not until you realized that even though your ears have reached the safe point by having your own audial environment, your eyes can never escape the torture. You then see people dancing the steps like it was as easy as Macarena. Hell!

Filipinos being hooked from songs that they can't even understand is not really that new. In the 90s, two or more particular Asian songs, not Korean, but Japanese hit songs topped the Philippine radio charts (heard they also gained popularity from the international scene). Acquiring wide radio and TV airtime, its status was very much the same to the wide acceptance of K-Pop songs in the Philippines today.

With “thorough and dedicated” research, I picked up my interest of hearing those songs again—than being fed up with “Nobody but you”— for nostalgic reasons and looked up the artists and songs of the popular Japanese hits of the 90s here in the Philippines. After finding the title and artist in forums and downloading from torrent, I thought that it would be nice to share them with you. I’m pretty sure somehow you can tolerate these songs, if you are a kid of the 90s that is. 

Before, most of us don't give nothing of a cent about ordinary Efren Penaflorida and what he does. Now, he's in every front page and headline of every local and international news after being highly recognized as a Hero of 2009. It is sad that such great appreciation for his good works has been granted not by his countrymen but of foreign advocates.

Efren Penaflorida, a Filipino street education advocate, received no or very little support from his countrymen and his Philippine government yet continued his passion of providing good education to poor children. And now he's named by CNN as Hero of the Year for 2009.

What went wrong for us Filipinos to be so blind of what the world can see?

We focus too much of pointing fingers to the corrupt a-holes in the government that we hardly notice the little good things that the modest “others” are carrying out to uplift the current situation of the country. No wonder, many Filipinos leave the country and, what usually happens, become successful in a foreign land. Why can’t we do it here?

Mr. Penaflorida did. We are just too busy of our daily uneventful routine to notice.

But the world did.

Very much like his famous Rosales Saga, Gagamba (The Spiderman) is one of F.Sionil Jose's novels associated also to another of his masterpiece, Ermita, in line with the story setting and some characters. I’ve been again learned with his views on the social and politicial subjects concerning the Philippines as he expansively reiterates the country’s cause of inadequate progress after the 1960s, or perhaps its vitiation after People Power.

The writing style is different from his other novels. He builds-up each of the character’s background per chapter and how they end up having the common denominator of consequentially being introduced to Gagamba and being within the famous Camarin when the historical 1990s Manila earthquake occurred. The story telling is entertaining though a bit dragging as you keep on guessing on how many chapters he’s going to allot for how many people. Then eventually you’ll end up on the last chapter—at long last, when the earthquake shattered the Camarin establishment and buries the characters, except for three people.

The novel’s last chapter and ending is a disappointment. I was expecting a little more to it after turning different stories of the characters each chapter, building up my anticipation. In the end, three individuals survived the Camarin’s heavy remains: Gagamba, the cripple (represents the battered but hardworking poor) who took care of one of the victim’s orphan Namnama (represents the country’s youth and hope) and Fred Villa (the corrupt opulent owner of Camarin) who’s source of sin and pride has been taken away by the accident, who I hope will eventually change his ways and be part of the nation’s development and change. The story of the destruction of Camarin depicts the Philippines’ continuing decline towards rock-bottom status. That the rebuilding of this country will depend on the individuals who were given second life by surviving the accident.

F. Sionil Jose's novel Gagamba tells a story of the Philippines in a post-Marcos timeframe, an interval wherein many Filipino's hopes and dreams are within reach after establishing democracy once again. To our despair, it seems that the dream has been an illusion all along. After achieving victory in the People Power, we still see ourselves and our nation stagnant in a swamp of poverty and corruption. One man’s power and dictatorship rule is cut, but the deceptive devils along with their intimidating leister are still lurking around, mortifying the very nation’s hope and spirit.
